I really like the ‘tradition’ that Austrians have of padlocking bridges. I’m not sure if it’s done elsewhere, but here in Austria I’ve seen it in Graz before, and now they’re starting here too. Basically it’s a thing for lovers to do; they write both their names on the padlock, lock it to the bridge and drop the key. It’s super cute.

Hello Tina,
It’s caught on in Prague too look: http://centralstationblog.wordpress.com/2013/03/03/photo-finish-lovelocks-of-prague/
That’s really cool! A lot more there than on this bridge!
I was walking in Innsbruck yesterday and there were a few starting to appear on one of the bridges over the river! I didn’t take a picture though.
Nice! Watch the progress.
That’s cool! Heard about this tradition, but wasn’t aware of it in Vienna. Which bridge is this?
Hi Ruxandra! It’s the bridge across the canal between the 3rd district and 2nd district, off Haidingergasse.
They just started doing it a year or two ago.. most of the ‘lovelocks’ aren’t that old.
Cool! Thanks a lot. I think I’ll pay a visit sometime soon.
http://being42.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/love_tokens_9-8-12.jpg – from Tampere, Finland…
That’s a beautiful picture Andrew! Thanks for sharing, that makes at least three countries, and probably more.
Seems people in Finland use stronger and more sturdy locks than here in Austria… hehe
I’ve never seen nor heard of this tradition. Thanks for sharing
I hadn’t either when I came here from Wellies, so I guess it’s really not a kiwi thing. Really cute tho!!
Romantic sacraments for a post-Industrial Revolution. Long may they fend off the boltcutters of divorce
What a lovely trend … if I ever see it somewhere in the world, I’ll understand!

It wouldn’t work in Johannesburg. The padlocks would get nicked.
but how come? They’re useless without a key
Our criminal element is a l lot more, what can I say. ”inventive” .
To expect the fence they were locked to still be there the following day might be considered optimistic!
It is done as well in Ljubljana,Slovenia, over “butcher’s bridge”:) Love ur blog xx
Thanks Mona!!!! And great – could you take a photo?
Would be awesome to see it!
I’ll chime in with a picture from Graz

But I’ve seen it in Paris, too! And in Cologne!
Great! I’ve seen them in Graz too, which is the place where I’ve seen the most at one time. Hmm. So far it’s limited to Europe.
I’ve just found a blog link with more international pictures:
